Firefox 3 not saving passwords on ubuntu

FirefoxI just updated firefox in my ubuntu laptop to the latest version 3.0.2+build6+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1. After restarting the browser most of the installed extensions stopped working, the problem was the loss of all the saved passwords.

I don’t know the reason for this issue, on the one hand it could be something related with the update process but on the other hand it can be a bug on the package. In any case, a workaround is to delete the file signons3.txt stored in the firefox profile directory, but be aware this will delete all your saved password. For instance, in my laptop the path for the file is:
/home/markdbd/.mozilla/firefox/6l9tuupe.defaultUPDATE: lama just wrote a comment with the solution, thanks for it. To fix the issue just open the signons3.txt file in text editor and save it with UTF-8 encoding.

This “solution” just deletes ALL your saved passwords so it cannot be called a “solution”. This is a bug in 3.0.2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/270429

In order to get your passwords back you need to open the signons3.txt file in text editor and save it with UTF-8 encoding. That’s it.
